Furniture Companies and the Future: What Lies Ahead

Tuesday, August 19th, 2014

Furniture Companies

The excitement and stress from preparing and participating in NeoCon has seemed to vanish, leaving in its wake the opportunity for businesses to take a breath and focus on the past quarter and their numbers. Two big names in the industry, Herman Miller and Steelcase, have released their numbers for this past quarter of the fiscal year. While their numbers show that both businesses have little to worry about by way of success, they are still not at the goals set by Wall Street or the company itself.

President and CEO of Steelcase Jim Keane believes that balancing out factory workloads will help to bring numbers up to where they are needed. The company plans to close two of it’s factories, one in France and one in North Carolina, and distribute the workload to an already established factory. They are looking at another factory in North America as well as a factory in Spain to distribute the work to. The company believes that their overall message is quite clear to both employees and customers alike while their brands continue to gain momentum in the industry.

Herman Miller CEO Brian Walker believes that while certain brands are pivotal in helping his company reach success, all brands are essential in it’s success. Herman Miller has found success in brands like Nemschoff and POSH, while other brands need more attention and work to reach their goals. Nemschoff still remains the leading brand in healthcare furniture while POSH remains a leader in the furniture industry in China. While both companies show no signs of worry, the current forecast for the fiscal year projects number that are failing to reach their goals. The companies are working to create a stable project environment while focusing more on production in Europe and Asia.

Too Much Sitting Could Lead to Cancer

Tuesday, August 12th, 2014

Sitting and Cancer Risk

It is no real secret that too much time spent sitting, whether it be for work or leisure, can lead to certain health issues. Previous studies have suggested that too much time in sitting can lead to issues including:

  • Blood clots
  • Poor physical functions
  • Heart disease
  • Blood sugar and insulin increase
  • Increased waistline
  • Early death

Now, in a new study that has been published in the June 16th edition of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, time spent sitting can now be linked to the increased risk of certain cancers. Researchers involved in the new study decided to focus on 43 specific case studies that linked increased time sitting with 70,000 cases of cancer. The study shows that increased time sitting can cause an increased risk for endometrial and colon cancer. The study breaks down bulk time spent sitting as well as bulk time spent specifically watching television. The study reveals that those who spend most of their time sitting during the day are at a 24 percent increased risk for colon cancer as well as a 32 percent increased risk for endometrial, also known as uterine, cancer. Those who spend the majority of their time sitting watching television are at an even larger risk. These individuals face a 54 percent increased risk for colon cancer as well as a 66 percent increased risk for endometrial cancer. It is believed that the risk increases for those in front of a television because of the increased intake of snacks and drinks that are unhealthy for you. The study also revealed that for every two hour increase of time spent sitting results in a 8 percent increase for colon cancer with a 10 percent increase for endometrial cancer. The increased risk can also be linked to an increase in weight gain, says Dr. Graham Colditz. Dr. Coldizt, an associate director for prevention and control at the Washington University’s Siteman Cancer Center is St. Louis, says that the findings from the new study aren’t surprising at all.

Tony Hill on the Front Page of Baltimore Business Journal

Monday, August 4th, 2014

Tony Hill Baltimore Business Journal

In a recent cover of the Baltimore Business Journal, Edwards and Hill’s very own Tony Hill can be seen on the cover as well as quoted in their front cover article. The article, written by Sarah Meehan, discusses the impact of casino revenue on small and minority businesses and contractors.

The article highlights the Small, Minority, and Women-Owned Business Investment Account, which is a fund from the Board of Public Works. The state account is created by slot machine revenue that is then used to help small businesses. The loans offered through the account include an interest rate that is either at or below the market rates. Some of the businesses that were able to receive loans through the account were unable to receive a traditional bank loan for their business. To understand the impact the account has on small businesses, Meehan includes a list of numbers in her article to help readers see the impact:

  • For the 2014 fiscal year, slot revenue reached $578.4 million.
  • Of that revenue, $8.4 million was dedicated to the account.
  • That makes up about 1.5% of the slot revenue that is allotted for small, minority, and women-owned businesses in the state of Maryland.

Some more numbers included in the article break down who received helped from the account program:

  • In 2013, 45 businesses were approved or received loans
  • 3 were veteran-owned
  • 15 were women-owned
  • 17 were minority businesses
  • 10 were small, non-minority businesses

Our Tony Hill was interviewed for the article to highlight another way the casino business is helping small businesses. Maryland gaming facilities such as Maryland Live! Casino and the future Horseshoe Casino Baltimore are working with minority contractors instead of more established contractors. Edwards and Hill currently furnishes Maryland Live! Casino and will be furnishing the Horseshoe Casino Baltimore. Tony Hill states in the interview that he knows that other contractors have more established resources than himself, but the gaming facilities give contractors opportunities that they might otherwise never have. Maryland Live! President Rob Norton sees the importance of strengthening the community economy. The casino has also hosted fairs for minority contractors to help establish relationships with businesses and vendors.
