Perks Of Updating Classroom Furniture

Friday, June 2nd, 2017
classroom furniture

Creating a comfortable environment in the classroom begins with the furniture.

The key to maximizing student engagement and boosting attention span can be directly connected to updating classroom furniture. Education focus groups, with new research, have shown that classrooms that are more deliberately designed show a direct correlation to student’s interaction lead to more academic success. The focus leans toward a student’s perspective where their environment can impact their behavior; translated, this means classrooms should strive to have open spaces with ample room to adapt and rearrange, allowing the form to mirror the content of their curriculum. Trends for Higher Education Design

Wednesday, February 11th, 2015

While there is constantly a spotlight on the designs of classrooms throughout the grade school level, people tend to forget the importance of classroom design within higher education as well. We forget that the purpose of college is to further our learning in hopes of finding success within the job market upon graduation. In order to do so, there needs to be focus placed on the classroom design within these universities to ensure students, no matter their age, are being placed in successful learning environments. Over the past few years, these four trends have stayed in the forefront of everyone’s mind when looking at classroom design within higher education.

Higher-Education

  1. Library Space- As more information is provided online rather than in printed texts, libraries are being used as a space to not only study, but interact. More colleges are using their libraries to provide areas for students to relax and not just study for their midterms. You are seeing more lounge furniture and an increase in computers while the areas dedicated to books are becoming more compact.
  2. Flexible Space- Furniture is being built for higher education classrooms to allow movement easily and effectively. Instead of heavy desks and chairs facing a single, permanent board, classrooms have furniture that allows the professor to change the environment. This means lighter desks, chairs on wheels, and boards covering the walls to allow easy movement and better classes.
  3. Collaboration- More studies continue to show that collaboration among students and professors makes for a more productive class. This means that not only classrooms, but other areas within a campus are being designed to encourage collaboration between staff members along with student interaction.
  4. New Concepts- As studies continue to show that the traditional lecture is not as effective when teaching; more classrooms are beginning to incorporate furniture that can move and change. Instead of a single desk or podium at the front of a room, classrooms are being designed with technology and communication in mind. More classes are implementing “experimental” learning strategies instead of the previously used lecture methods, which means classrooms need to mirror that goal.

Furniture Companies and the Future: What Lies Ahead

Tuesday, August 19th, 2014

Furniture Companies

The excitement and stress from preparing and participating in NeoCon has seemed to vanish, leaving in its wake the opportunity for businesses to take a breath and focus on the past quarter and their numbers. Two big names in the industry, Herman Miller and Steelcase, have released their numbers for this past quarter of the fiscal year. While their numbers show that both businesses have little to worry about by way of success, they are still not at the goals set by Wall Street or the company itself.

President and CEO of Steelcase Jim Keane believes that balancing out factory workloads will help to bring numbers up to where they are needed. The company plans to close two of it’s factories, one in France and one in North Carolina, and distribute the workload to an already established factory. They are looking at another factory in North America as well as a factory in Spain to distribute the work to. The company believes that their overall message is quite clear to both employees and customers alike while their brands continue to gain momentum in the industry.

Herman Miller CEO Brian Walker believes that while certain brands are pivotal in helping his company reach success, all brands are essential in it’s success. Herman Miller has found success in brands like Nemschoff and POSH, while other brands need more attention and work to reach their goals. Nemschoff still remains the leading brand in healthcare furniture while POSH remains a leader in the furniture industry in China. While both companies show no signs of worry, the current forecast for the fiscal year projects number that are failing to reach their goals. The companies are working to create a stable project environment while focusing more on production in Europe and Asia.

Edwards and Hill Office Furniture is proud to furnish local casinos as well as providing quality furniture for corporate offices, hospitality businesses, educational settings, and healthcare facilities. Tony Hill has been partnering with Hans Edwards since 1998 to provide quality multimedia and furniture services to a number of different businesses and industries.

It’s highly recommended to furnish classrooms with collaborative furniture and ergonomic furniture for the best modern classroom design.

Here at Edwards & Hill Office Furniture, we can process large orders for standard school desks by the same manufacturer. This goes the same for library furniture, cafeteria furniture as well as computer lab furniture.

Classroom setups should always be designed with age appropriate furniture to assure students the best comfort and learning experience.

Here are some other cool features you may want to add to your classroom setups:

  • Cubbies with hooks. This can help you prevent clutter in lower school classroom settings by helping children keep items off the floor when not in use (this can range from toys to sports gear).

  • A graffiti wall.  All you need is a poster board/ chart paper and color markets. It’s a great way to encourage students to express themselves and keep engaged with the classroom curriculum.

  • Technical furniture to accommodate the use of laptops and tablets.

Friday, July 12th, 2013

Is your college campus constructing or redesigning a residence hall? If yes, Edwards & Hill office Furniture is here to help you design highly attractive habitable areas.

The main rooms students use in college residential halls are the lounges, recreation rooms and most importantly their dorm rooms.

Each of these areas needs to be designed in a way that offers furniture flexibility and maximizes the usability of each area space.

Ideally, kitchen commons should be located in close proximity to the lounges and recreation rooms for added convenience to students.

For these entertainment areas, Edwards & Hill Office Furniture can provide audio/visual equipment to help meet a variety of applications needed for dorm safety presentations, social events and general hangout purposes.

Here is some audio/visual equipment recommended for residence halls:

-Telephones with telephone outlets

-Cable TV

-Computers

-And other communications equipment.

The Lounge

In the lounge area and recreation rooms, purchase multifunctional, compact and highly mobile furniture. For example, tables with casters are excellent for students as well as mobile coffee tables and cubed bookcases for study lounge areas.

As for the dorm room essentials, here are our recommendations:

-Built-in closets for single bedroom dorms

-Twin XL Beds

-Bunk beds

-Ergonomic seating

-Futon furniture

-And other hospitality furniture items.

The ideal dorm setting will make rearranging furniture a breeze.

High quality dorm furniture is truly a college necessity.

Here at Edwards & Hill Office Furniture, we offer additional services including furniture assembly services and interior design services/space planning. There should be enough room in the dorm setting to offer students the privilege to move work desks back-to-back or side-to-side. They should have the option to move their dressers in closets and more. The more space students have in their dorms, the better.

Friday, May 24th, 2013

Summer is on the way. It’s a great time to Feng Shui the office for a more vibrant and energized office space.

Feng Shui designs will enhance your work productivity.

A feng shui office should be designed with corporate furniture that makes you feel successful, appreciated and happy.

People feel these types of positive energy when they can express their creativity and work in a flexible office environment.

You can start creating positive energy in your office space by applying the feng shui commanding position to your desk arrangement.

What is the feng shui commanding position?

The feng shui commanding position is when the desk is faced forward to the door but not in line with the door. This feng shi commanding position will reduce office clutter, help you stay organized and always know when people come in and out of the room.

Add some feng shui plants to your office space as well. Feng shui plants are rich, lush in appearance. Best of all feng shui plants will improve your air quality.

For example: Areca Palmis is a beautiful, air purifying plant that will bring living-flowing energy to the office space. Have an odd number of plants in your office space to increase vibrant energy.

As for reducing work stress and frustration, have proper lighting in the office. Grow lights for floor lamps or table lamps are far more welcoming than fluorescent lighting or overhead lights. When the eyes have a relief from overly bright lighting, the atmosphere helps reduce the mental stress and frustration of workers.

Ergonomic Furniture: How To Create A Spacious And Flexible Science Lab

Friday, May 17th, 2013

Designing a high school science lab for a public or private school is never easy. Edwards & Hill Office Furniture is here to give you a few pointers on designing a highly functional high school lab design.

Often in high schools science labs are created with specific scientific disciplines in mind. Here are some standard high school lab designs:

  • Physics Lab

  • Chemistry Lab

  • Biology Lab

Or a common lab design could be offered to accommodate all of the above.

The typical science lab includes furniture items such as counters, base cabinets, wall cabinets and fixed islands.

It is recommended that high school labs house at a maximum 24 students at a time and spacious enough to provide 6 square feet per student in a lab.

Ergonomic furniture items and flexible furniture arrangements are highly recommended for science lab designs.

Each lab table should be a comfortable enough station for at least two students.

Lab tables with epoxy resin or phenolic resin tops will make for sturdy workstations. The top is durable and will hold up to chemicals.  Movable tables will provide the best flexibility for easy transitions from lab discussions to presentations.

Here are some other lab furniture essentials:

  • Ventilation system such as a fume hood

  • Fixed Lab Stations

When designing keep these three words in mind:

  • Ventilation

  • Visibility

  • Projection

To meet these lab safety requirements, the lab should have moveable tables that can be positioned in a rectangle or square format, known as the pier table design. The pier table design will provide a clear path for supervisors to monitor lab students. Fixed lab stations should be installed on the walls of the room. The teacher should have a fixed table front and center of the pier design layout.

Plastic laminate pier tables are great moveable tables that feature sturdy ergonomic chairs.

Have laminate laboratory casework installed on the walls of the lab as well as laminate pier tables.

To have a modern chemistry lab designed for you take a look at Edwards & Hill Office Furniture’s laboratory furniture (test tub racks, cabinets and more) and ergonomic furniture lines.

Hospitality Furniture: How To Create A First Class Hotel Room

Thursday, May 2nd, 2013

A numerous amount of people will begin to travel as summer approaches. When guests stay at your hotel, the first impression and last impression are extremely important long after they check out.  You want them to refer to your hotel as a first class hotel every time they tell someone about their stay with your property.

How can you make sure that your guests get a first class experience at your hotel? You can start by designing first class guest rooms.

Guests will always remember their night stay at a hotel. The hotel room should have an appealing color palette and scheme that correlates with your overall hotel theme and geographical setting – beach, forest, desert, etc.

The hotel room should provide plenty of privacy and comfort to guests. It is very important to provide privacy and comfort to guests in the hotel room because the bed and bedroom setting are highly memorable to hotel guests for better or for worse. Every hotel room is a reflection on the style and sophistication of the hotel.

For the best hotel room design results, keep luxury and multi-functionality in mind. Here are some rules of thumb to follow:

  1. Provide hotel guests plenty of space and flexibility. They should have a spacious bed/ sleeping area. They should have ergonomic chairs for reading and watching TV. There should be a coffee table and mini fridge included in every hotel room. And you can’t forget the office desk for work or leisure activity.

  2. The hotel room should also have a healthy air quality by providing good ventilation and HVAC system controls. Avoid positioning the bed underneath air vents to prevent cold or hot air blowing on hotel guests as they sleep.

  3. Have good hotel room lighting. There should be a bedside lamp, a closet light, and reading lights in the bedroom. In the bathroom, there should be lights installed on the makeup mirror, wall sconces and vanity (over head lights are the best for the vanity). Dimmer controls are in popular demand for soothing baths.

Always provide an area for breakfast – coffee station, and a side table for snacks and other beverages. A mini bar or wine cooler will also delight hotel guests and increase revenue.

Here are crucial hotel room accessories you should feature to keep guests booking and recommending your hotel time and time again:

  • Comfortable bed mattress with aesthetically pleasing dust skirts, sheets, and duvets.

  • Provide colorful throw pillows for the ergonomic chairs. All other colors used in the room should be neutral colors – blacks, tans, whites, and brown.

Edwards & Hill Office Furniture is here to provide hospitality furniture that fits every segment of your hotel – hotel rooms, lobbies, restaurants, and bars.

We also provide the following services with hospitality furniture purchasing:

Cafeteria Furniture: How To Improve Cafeteria Traffic Flow And Socializing

Monday, April 29th, 2013

Arranging students in a cafeteria can be a pleasant social environment or a full out nightmare. With the right traffic flow and cafeteria furniture, you can promote good behavior in students and provide them a fun, comfortable lunchroom experience.

When students and visitors to the school step in the cafeteria, you want the lunchroom to look impressive and make socializing easier.

Good traffic flow and quality cafeteria furnishing should be top priority in cafeteria design.

To improve traffic flow, make sure that lunch lines are carefully planned out from classroom to cafeteria. This will help students spend less time in the cafeteria line and they can be seated quicker.

It is best to seat students in order of food giving. Make sure cafeteria tables provide plenty of walkway space between each other to make seating and lunch dismissal as easy as possible.

As for making lunch supervision easy, there should be no cafeteria furniture items obstructing cafeteria vision. This will help with cafeteria noise control because supervisors can teach, enforce, and reinforce all lunchroom rules based on observing student behaviors.

Another cafeteria design must is having vibrant colored furniture and interior design features.

Colorful cafeteria furniture and overall cafeteria design will help students remain energized for afternoon lessons.

Sterile cafeterias only make students feel sluggish after lunchtime.

Furnishing the cafeteria with colorful ergonomic chairs and other ergonomic furniture items will keep students engaged for learning and comfortable during eating.

You should also consider the following cafeteria furnishings and decorations:

  • Wall murals. They are lovely artistic additions to cafeteria settings.

  • Round cafeteria tables are perfect for socializing.

  • Rectangular cafeteria tables make for great serving tables.
