Designing a Productive Home Office

Productive home office

Your home office should have plenty of function while still incorporating your personal touch.

The workplace is rapidly changing in the 2016. One of the biggest changes is the increasing prominence of the “telecommuter.” With so much focus being placed currently on the concept of “work-life balance,” telecommuting allows employees to, well, balance work and life. That can mean anything from doing laundry to taking care of kids or, at the very least, not having to be stuck in an office for 8+ hours a day, 5+ days a week. For those who get to enjoy telecommuting, there can be a difficult transition from working in an office whose sole function is work, to working at home, which used to be a place of relaxation and escape from work. Luckily, Edwards & Hill Office Furniture has put together this guide for designing a productive home office space.

Mark Your Territory

The first step to building a productive home office is to identify a space for that office. That doesn’t mean saying that you’re going to do your work at the kitchen table. It’s important, psychologically, to distinguish a place for work in order to be focused and productive throughout the work day. Ideally this will be a separate, spare room with a door, but if you don’t have a whole room to spare, picking an unused corner of a room will do. Who doesn’t love the corner office, anyway?

Furnishing a Productive Home Office

Once you’ve decided on a space, it’s time for home office furniture. To create a productive home office, it’s a good idea to use some office furniture rather than home furniture to keep you on track, like we mentioned above in choosing a dedicated office space. Keep both organization and function at the forefront of your decision-making, and choose furniture that fits the size of the space you’ve chosen. If you’re cramming into a small space, you’ll want a compact desk with plenty of storage to stay organized in a small space. If you have a little more room to work with, you can put your focus on ergonomics for your chair and desk to prevent distracting discomfort. Lastly, once function and organization are accounted for, feel free to take your personal taste into account. After all, one of the greatest things about working from home is that it’s your space to design how you please.
