5 Office Layout Tips

As you’re planning your office design, keep these five aspects in mind.

When you are designing an office, the layout is a huge and important consideration. At first glance, it may seem like a little thing that doesn’t require much attention or consideration. The truth is that the layout of the office can influence productivity and morale. As you’re planning your new office design or your office redesign, keep these five aspects of design in mind.

Get Quality Furniture

It is hard to stay focused and productive in uncomfortable furniture. This doesn’t mean that you need to purchase the most high-end standing desks and cutting-edge ball style seats or ergonomic chairs you can find. Just keep in mind that you get what you pay for. If you go with a low cost, low-quality furniture, your employees may be uncomfortable and unmotivated. You may also find yourself replacing the furniture sooner than you’d like.

Incorporate Natural Light

Natural light is a very important part of good office design. Exposure to natural light has been shown to help people feel more awake and alert, and to lead to increases in productivity. Artificial lighting also leads to eye strain and headaches because it is harder on our eyes.  Our eyes are designed to constantly adjust to the changes in natural light, so using as much as possible is a healthier choice.

Design A Welcoming Lobby

Your lobby does more than just greet your visitors. It is their first impression of your business and it sets the tone for their visit. Decide what you want your lobby to say about your brand and how you want your visitors to navigate it. Will you have a central receptionist desk or are you replacing that with a self-service kiosk?  Once you have those types of decisions made, plan your design to make them happen. A professional designer may be a good resource if you get stuck on this aspect of office design.

Include Storage

Your storage needs also should be a consideration as you’re planning the office design. While much of your work may be done in the cloud, you will likely still need some physical storage solutions. If nothing else, you need a storage area for cleaning supplies and extra office supplies.

Have Enough Space

Finally, it is important to acknowledge when you don’t have enough space. Don’t try to cram more into the space than you can reasonably fit. If you want both open space for collaborative work and cubicles for independent work, you will need more space than you might think – don’t forget that you also need space for people to walk around.
