Purchasing The Right Office Chair For Your Body Frame

Tuesday, July 10th, 2012

Studies have revealed time spent sitting at work has increased due to hectic work schedules and demands. In a physically and mentally stressful environment, having the right office chair is a necessity.

But what is considered a quality office chair?

The most comfortable office chairs are the ones that uniformly support the body, can be easily maneuvered and they are easily adjustable to provide lasting comfort and help maintain proper posture.

There is no such thing as a uniform chair design that will fit every employee perfectly. Chairs need to be properly fitted to the proportions of chair users to prevent experiences of discomfort or severe injury.

The following tips will help you pick a proper office chair for your frame:

Pick the Right Seat Depth For Your Body

Having the right seat depth is essential to your office chair being comfortable. A chair too small will not offer enough support for your thighs to sit comfortably in your chair throughout the day. A chair too big will put too much pressure against the back of your knees, making you suffer tremendous discomfort throughout the workday.

To prevent these kinds of discomforts, measure the distance from the back of your knees to the backrest. You should have roughly an inch and a half distance between the seat edge and the back of your knee.

Seat slider chairs will help you to adjust seat depths best.

Have a Comfortable Seat Height

The next important factor in having a good office chair is seat height. Your chair should allow you to sit with your feet flat on the floor. Your knees should be comfortably bent at a 90-degree angle. This is a good sign you will have a proper seat height for your body.
The majority of office chairs come with a 4” adjustment range and specialty ergonomic chairs come with different height cylinders to accommodate both tall and short occupants.

Once you have discovered the perfect seat depth and height, you can then identify the best armrests for your office chair.

Perfect Armrests

Often office computer users experience neck and shoulder pain because armrests are being elevated without proper support. Proper armrests are designed to support the neck and shoulder muscles. You do not want your armrests to limit access to your keyboard or desk. Your armrests should not restrict movement or access to a workstation.

Your armrests should be the same height as your resting elbow height to prevent discomfort. Make sure the chair you purchase has armrests that can be adjusted to your preferred width and height.

At all times, your shoulders and upper arms should be in line with your torso and perpendicular to the floor. When in this position, your shoulders and upper arms should be relaxed. They should not be elevated or stretched forward.

As for the Back Rest, it should follow the natural curve of your back. The majority of office chairs resemble a “S” shape curve to conform to the natural shape of chair occupants.
Avoid backrests that are fixed in place. These types of backrests do not properly support the natural shape of tall or short users. With an adjustable backrest, you will be able to position your chair’s backrest to meet the shape of your spine.

If you naturally experience upper back pain, purchase a chair with a taller back to have full support for your shoulders and neck. Read our article Why is Ergonomic Office Furniture Beneficial To Employees? for more details on comfortable office furniture.
